Why should we teach the Jewish holocaust in history if there are obscenities in that? Why should we show Rambo and violent movies on TV if there are obscenities in them? Do you think that we should ban children from watching the news? It is also the truth but you don't hear anyone complaining to you do you!!!!

PostFun responds: Actually there is a great deal of debate concerning "family friendly news" that would omit violent content. You'll definitely hear me complaining about this.

I am against all forms of censorship. As for the Bible taken out of context, most lobby groups (such as the anti-smoking or anti-gun) also use data out of context to promote their brand of propoganada.

Where modern day portrayals of violent and sexual acts tend to dwell on the sordid details, that is not the case in the Bible. Additionally, the Bible uses its minor examples of sex and violence to present moral points which have been accepted through the years by Christians, athiests, agnostics, and all other religious beliefs to be fundamental moral principles, regardless of belief. Benjamin Franklin, for example, was far fom being Christian, but he went to great lengths to adopt high moral standards, very similar to those found in the Bible. The use of non-graphic sex and violence in the Bible is therefore not contradictory to parental concern about what their children read in school. While choices of right and wrong need to be made on an individual basis, parents should have some say in what their children have access to until those children are old enough to make choices on their own. Because of the high moral standards, agreed upon by more than just Christians(!), that the Bible supports, the Bible is a valuable piece of literature, unlike many modern texts, where sex and violence is used merely for aesthetic pleasure. Such portrayals serve merely to desensitize and injure the moral conscience of children and adults.

I feel the Bible is the true word of God. The Bible offers lessons for those who don't believe in God. The Bible may be looked upon as a book to guide one's life. It is also the basis for our morals and laws. If you ban the Bible on this premise, you will have to ban network news, magazines, and newspapers. I don't think banning is the answer. Education and understanding of the Bible will help children live more moral lives. No one can force anyone to believe the Bible is written by God, but it still has valuable lessons for all. I will close by saying I do believe the Bible was written by God and we can all learn from HIS BOOK.

I'm am not christian or anything, I'm supposed to be a Jew (I don't believe in God at all) but I think that first of all violence is part of our society, and so is sex. therefore, i think that people at all ages should have the option of reading the bible because it's also part of our legacy, and history, if we block this from children, they will lose part of the generations before them.

Although I am against censorship, especially when it comes to education, I have to digress from this opinion in the case of that "holy" document, the Bible. I feel that, especially in the Old Testament, that Bible goes way too far, almost to the point of (dreaded) pornography. If one were to write the Bible today, it would surely be a banned book. I have mused that it would be interesting to conduct a body count of all the murders, rapes, beatings, etc that occur in the "inerrant word of God." After all, isn't that what fandagelicals do when they promote TV censorship, music censorship, book bannings? Alas, I fear that our arguments would fall on deaf ears - logic has no power over these people.

There is a German term known to us Biblical scholars, that is called "Sitz Im Laben" It means "Situation in life" By this, we say that one must understand the context of the passage in terms of who wrote it, when it was written, what type of life the person who wrote it might have had, the problems of translating from the Hebrew to the English, etc... All of your quotations are taken completely out of context, true, we may read many references into the Bible, but it is not always clear that the meanings we associate with the words are the same that were origionally intended.

After reading through your clever anecdotes, I am left with a puzzled look and and a sick stomach. I gather from the warm special note that you get a good deal of not-so-nice responses from Christians, so I'll try not to be insulting. Maybe. But, judging by this page, I'm confident that you have a wide scope of what you consider "insulting." I guess that my main response to your clever distortions of Scripture is that I really hope and pray that you would look a little harder into the Bible and meet the incredible loving God that wants to give you an incredibly full and meaningful life. I know that it is easy to take potshots at what you don't like or understand, but it's not as easy when you have to put your own beliefs on the line for public scrutiny. Anyway, (I hope you didn't find that too offensive) I would be glad to correspond with you and find out what has caused such animosity towards something that has so powerfully influenced my life.

Why can my children witness hundreds of hours of irresponsible violent acts in the media but people go "ballistic" when anyone trys to portray responsible, "safer" sexual conduct to children of the same age range?

Wouldn't you prefer your kids to mimic responsible sex than irresponsible violence??? HEL-L-L-O??? "Intelligent life?..." I know... "Nuke the gay whales..."

How do you feel playing with fire? You certainly have read the Bible to make such comments. Then you must know that the LORD is a consuming fire. He does not you to perish. No hard feelings.

You have misquoted and taken out of context many of the verses of the Bible. Those concerning abortion and homosexuality were very much off the mark. If you look in the Bible you will find many examples against homosexuality. David and Jonathan did not have sex. They were extremely close friends. Look up Sodom and Gomorrah to see that homosexuality was one of the reasons he destroyed them.

If this was supposed to be a logic trap, you made a mistake. The first question does not ask if the bible should be banned from schools, only if you think there should be some control over what children should see and read in general. You don't even refer to books! Anyway I do shield my daughter from some images and others I don't. It depends upon the context and nature of what it is. Finally, in regard to the Bible's graphic nature, it seems to me to be no different than reading any history in humanity. It is violent and graphic. Since I consider the Bible to be an historical account, the context merely is recording "what happened." This is very different from sex and violence for entertainment. Finally, I read some of these out of curiosity. It is interesting how something out of context can really give a distortion. For example, the Judges 19 story about the raped woman, who was cut into 12 pieces--definitely scary stuff!! However, you neglect to add that the woman was dead at the door. Second, you did not seem to bother mentioning that the Israelites went to war over this "evil" thing that was done. Have a nice day.

I believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and that shielding children from it would be the worst mistake our world could ever make. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. Jesus said, "Do not forbid the little children to come to me." Please consider carefully what you are trying to accomplish.

It is meant to give us a means of passing morals on to our offspring. How else do you suggest that we pass on morals and values to our kids? Look around you, and see what your society has done to its offspring. NOTHING AT ALL!! They are spoiled, greedy, uncaring, ungiving, deceitful, and do not have a clue that they have these characteristics and worse, they don't care. Who is supposed to feel all the pain that society is suffering? GOD? Themselves? No, the parents who did not take the responsibility to discipline them and pass some type of helpful values.

The Bible is not a story book. It's not a law book. It's not a textbook to be studied and interpretted into different beliefs, each setting different rules of conduct and ridiculing other groups or churches. The Bible introduces GOD as the creator of existance. This idea and possible truth has existed in all cultures as far back as records exist for those cultures. What this idea has done is create a fear of a higher being that looks over us and protects us. If we are kind to others they will return the kindness or you will receive praise from GOD. If you were not kind then you will be punished. By being unkind, one may find oneself abandoned or isolated from the others which is uncomfortable for anyone.

All the stories in the Bible are related to some type of human experience that will always be present in man. By throwing out the Bible you no longer have a solid source of morals and values. Are you going to make it up as you go?

The problem with the Bible is not the stories in it but the churches which translate it to custom fit their wants and closed-minded understanding of the world.

There is no particular way the world should be, but its people should be respecting themselves and others around them. This is what the Bible is about but no-one will dare teach it this way.

I found your selected excerpts quite interesting. As with anybody looking for a reason to discard anything they do not like, people will look through very filtered eyes to find evidence to susport their cause. This goes for both sides of this debate. What I have seen here are snap shots of situations that do not give the total picture. Most people don't care and will find support for their cause what ever the cause may be. Day to lay lives incorporate all these things mentioned here and you would find it very difficult to describe those situations with the tact that we have just finished reading. Obviously, your opinion of Christ Jesus and His holy inspired word is not very good, this is very sad. When you die, and you will, you can stand before the Almighty and explain to Him the NC-17 rating you propose for His Text and why it should be banned. Although we have never met, I wish we could, I will pray for you because if you do not repent of your sins, eternity will not be pleasant.

I sincerely hope that as you read His Word that your eyes are not so blinded that the intent is not lost, although it appears it already is.

The scriptures that you used were taken out of context, and the ones of sin that were posted, eventually were denounced by the Bible. You also may notice that in the scriptures that you did print, that those scriptures themselves did not even condone the sins that were presented.

This is too funny. Point well taken and unlike most, previously understood. One of the most horrific images I saw as a child was not on TV or a film it was a detailed sculpture of Christ on the cross. It scared the shit out of me, and I found it ironic this same establishment shielded me from material less extreme.

Bibles should never have been banned from schools. I go to a private catholic school. We have mass about once a month at school. It really touches me to see so many teenagers my age in touch with God. I used to go to public school and to talk about god or the bible was like commiting the ultimate sin when in fact it is the other way around. To have religion in schools brings out the best of everyone.

Huck Finn is banned from some schools, because of the politically correctness of society. Plus in my former high school, the bible was placed under reference not fiction.
