The entries below reflect the impact that the Christian religion has had on language. The book, "Sexual Slang," by Alan Richter, Ph.D. was an invaluable resource for this material as were the many anonymous readers who sent their own submissions.
The terms below fall into three basic categories: Christian jargon with subliminally sexual connotations [e.g. 'rapture'], sexual terminology influenced by the church [e.g. 'pudenda'] and religious terminology coopted as sexual code [e.g. 'kneeling at the alter'].

Born Again
- For a society that divides body and soul, denigrating the former and vaunting the latter, birth is a nasty affair associating one with all the weaknesses of carnal flesh [read woman]. This unfortunate state of affairs requires a second, spiritual birth through male intervention [Christ] and the applications of culture. One is washed in the blood of the lamb, rather than the blood of carnal birth.
The process of being born-again wrests the power and glory of birth from women and gives it to men who make it sacred, no longer a mere bodily function. Not content with this monopoly the church attempts to further control the ability of women to give birth by controlling reproductive rights.
Burning Bush
- An aroused female.
Climax
- The climax of history, of the last days, of the war between heaven and earth.

Kneel at the alter
- To take the submissive position in sexual encounter.

Mark of the Beast
- This term was used in the 18th century to describe female genitalia. In Christian lore, anyone receiving the mark of the beast would never see the kindom of God.
Missionary Position
- The only sexual position sanctioned by the Catholic church. The woman lies on her back, the man positions himself on top. Any other position was thought to be animalistic and degrading. Certain exceptions were made for the obese though they were to bear the shame in mind through the procedure. So convinced was the church of the propriety of the missionary position that it even described the behavior of demons - the male incubus took the superior position while the female succubus took the opposite.

Sodomy
- The sin of inhospitality exhibited in the fear and abuse of strangers. Mistakenly attributed to homosexual acts by Philo of Alexandria in the first century (C.E.) though there is no biblical basis for this belief.
