BORN a SINNER

What is Original Sin? It is the idea that all of us, no matter how blameless our lives might be, are sinners just the same; it means that we are born sinners. But where did all this sin come from?

It came from Adam and Eve when they ate of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. By some mysterious method this First Sin has trickled down through the ages and infected all the rest of us. Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned... (Romans 5:12).

Thus wrote the Apostle Paul around the year 57. And the early Christian church soon discovered that making people feel guilty just for having been born was a wonderful way to make converts. That way you donŐt have to commit a sin first in order to be forgiven; you are automatically a sinner in need of salvation. And of course the Christians claim that they have the only means of salvation.

But did Jesus ever mention Original Sin? There is not a word about it in the gospels. There is not even the slightest hint that he had ever heard of such a thing.

Next time a Christian tries to tell you that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), ask him if Jesus ever said anything about Original Sin. He will probably be surprised to hear that he never did.
