Netflix Warns Viewers To Not Attempt The “Bird Box Challenge”

In hopes of achieving Internet fame, people have become obsessed with Internet challenges that tend to put its participants in danger. Whether it’s 2018’s fad of eating poisonous Tide Pods or dancing outside of a driverless car listening to Drake’s “In My Feelings,” people get hurt, yet continue to do it. On December 13, 2018, Netflix released their original film Bird Box for streaming. The movie follows a family living in an apocalyptic world where they have to wear blindfolds in order to stay alive. The film quickly became an Internet sensation, becoming the subject of countless memes and argumentative comment sections. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t before the movie sparked another Internet challenge.

Now, people are participating in what is known as the “Bird Box Challenge.” The challenge consists of participants wearing blindfolds themselves, attempting to perform daily tasks without their vision. Although it started out as an innocent challenge with people having fun in the safety of their own home, things escalated quickly. Participants eventually began taking the challenge outside, attempting to shop at grocery stores, cross the street, and even drive their car! Netflix went so far as to release a statement saying: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.” All we can do now is wait and see how long this Internet fad lasts.
