500 Days of Summer took the manic pixie dream girl trope and turned it on its head. The film follows Tom Hansen (played by Joseph Gorden-Levitt) as he examines his failed relationship with Summer, a quirky girl he met at work.

Summer has all the hallmarks of a manic pixie dream girl (she even listens to The Smiths like Sam from Garden State). Tom can’t see Summer as a full human, though— which is the whole problem with the trope.
