Unlike other actors who just take on a persona, Adrian Brody gave up all his worldly possessions to play a Polish Jewish refugee during the Holocaust in The Pianist. Brody gave up his apartment, sold his car, disconnected his cell phone, and even broke up with his girlfriend. He said he wanted to learn what it felt like to lose everything.

“There is an emptiness that comes with really starving that I hadn’t experience. I couldn’t have acted that without knowing it. I’ve experienced loss, I’ve experienced sadness in my life, but I didn’t know the desperation that comes with hunger.” His method acting worked, and at 29 years old, he became the youngest person to ever win the Oscar for Best Actor.
