In the HBO documentary, Spielberg, the director talked about the time he saw the Oscar-winning film Lawrence of Arabia. He fell in love with the film, but he was so intimidated by it that he almost backed away from making movies altogether. Spielberg admitted that the bar was raised “too high” and it demoralized the 16-year-old.
Nevertheless, Spielberg went back to the theater once a week, taking notes on how director David Lean organized ideas and images for the movie. After seeing the movie three more times, Spielberg knew that filmmaking was going to define his life.
Spielberg’s paranoia of pursuing films became his biggest success in 1975.
