Intimidated by the failure of his independent film, Lucas focused on his next movie with little success. He wasn’t successful at pitching the concept of American Graffiti to potential financiers, but Universal Pictures eventually agreed to distribute the coming-of-age comedy.

The movie was made on a budget of less than $1 million. It received critical acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. In 1995, the United States Library of Congress considered the film to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” as it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
