After his arrest, many were shocked that such a smart guy could turn into a hermit. Kaczynski left academics to build his cabin and live off the land near Lincoln, Montana. The members of the town called him “The Hermit,” but the wilderness lifestyle wasn’t too unique up there.

When they caught him, many of the townspeople refused to believe the kind, quiet guy in the cabin was the Unabomber.
