The Aum Shinrikyo made national headlines in Japan when there were accusations made against their leader, Shoko Asahara, for holding members against their will.

Asahara believed that only his members would survive the imminent doomsday brought by the Americans. The group executed a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway which killed 12 people and injured 50. The group also murdered a lawyer, his wife, and child after they found out he was working on a class action lawsuit.
