John Frum is a figure that’s associated with a cult on the island of Tanna. He’s seen as an American World War Two serviceman who will bring wealth and prosperity to people who follow him.

This cult worships the machinery and goods that the Americans brought with them when they landed at Tanna. The name “John Frum” is said to have come from the idea of “John from America.” The cult built giant airplane runways with wooden control towers to attract their American “God” back.
