Founded in the 1970s in San Deigo, the Heaven’s Gate cult would become infamous for their radical views involving aliens, spaceships and “recycling” of planet Earth.

The group was founded by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, and they began claiming that a spaceship was following the Hale-Bopp comet. That ship would carry the Heaven’s Gate members to the next level of existence. 38 of their members all committed suicide by poisoning their applesauce. They were all found wearing Nike shoes with $5.75 in their pocket.
