Indiana native Jim Jones was responsible for the death of 918 of his members in the People’s Temple. He believed that a nuclear war was imminent and moved his church and followers to Guyana.

The group lived there for several years before members started speaking out about the abuse happening in the village. US Congressman Leo Ryan went to the village to investigate and was shot by Temple guards. Jones made all of his supporters drink a cyanide-laced beverage that same day. Almost everyone died, and it was the most Americans to die of unnatural causes in one place up until 9/11.
